Role description

IPsoft is looking to hire an innovative Senior Character Artist to join our team full time in New York City. You will be part of a bleeding edge artificial intelligence company that is pushing the boundaries of technology and the humanization of machines. The Senior Character Artist will directly report into the Executive Director of Experience Design, in the cognitive group.


Amelia, our cognitive agent has a neocortex that functions the way the human brain does - now we want to bring the same level of fidelity to her appearance. Our goal is to make her indistinguishable from her human counterpart Lauren Hayes, while delivering highly nuanced facial expressions that help her communicate like a real human. In your role as hands on lead artist, you’ll be responsible for developing her look to Hollywood movie level AAA quality.


What our Character Artist will do:

  • Create world class realistic 3D lead female characters and props (male characters in the future).
  • Create and refine textures that meet the visual style and quality bar.
  • Create and refine skin tone, textures and hair based on photo references.
  • Creating high-poly and low-poly models of characters following concept art

or art direction for in-game engine and cinematic usage with nominal direction

from Senior and/or Lead Artists.

  • Creating efficient UV layouts that work well within the engine/platform constraints.
  • Photorealistic texturing of characters which includes diffuse, normal map, specular, bump.
  • Generate different material types and pushing the visuals on assets created.
  • Work with the Character Team in technical/aesthetic problem solving efforts.
  • Work with team on motion capture, animation, and video creation.
  • Work with R&D and Cognitive groups to push the boundaries of humanization.



  • 3+ years of experience creating AAA quality character assets for games, film or animation.
  • Portfolio demonstrating exceptional character designs with animatable topology.
  • Strong grasp of composition, color theory, value, form, scale, shape language, and silhouette.
  • Strong knowledge of human/animal anatomy and proportions.
  • Ability to embellish concepts with technical constraints in mind while maintaining overall aesthetic.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and communicate well with multiple teams outside of the Character Modeling Department.
  • Comfortable prototyping and working with iterative development process.
  • Comfortable receiving constructive group criticism and making artistic adjustments to meet performance guidelines.
  • Excellent work ethic, self-motivated, organized, and able to meet deadlines.
  • An eye for detail while maintaining efficient model making
  • Excellent sense of form
  • Passion for pushing the state of the art in asset fidelity and production techniques
  • High degree of self-motivation and initiative, excellent time management
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills - excellent communicator, over communicates
  • Great mentorship skills - willing and able to teach others




  • Experience with Unreal 4 engine
  • AAA game development experience as a Character Artist
  • 3+ years experience with industry standard applications:
    • Zbrush, Maya/Max/Modo, Photoshop, 3D Coat or Substance Painter
  • Understanding of Rigging/Animation a plus
  • Experience with Unity a plus
